Your unique perspectives and lived experiences make your input vital. DSA is a grassroots, democratic, multi-tendency socialist organization. This means a willingness to accept people holding a wide variety of political views (tendencies) as allies and members. DSA is a “big tent” organization.
The Western Montana DSA chapter, though centered in Missoula, is open for membership to anyone living in western Montana. We believe that the economy and our society should be run democratically to meet the needs of all humans, not to make profits for a few. And in doing so it should also focus on this majestic planet we call home which badly needs our love. Although DSA organizes actions in the community and workplace we are an activist organization, not a political party. Through campus and community-based chapters members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to non-violent direct action, to fight for electoral changes that empower working people. DSA is not a part of the Democratic Party nor any other party: rather we work to elect people who share our values and vision regardless of party affiliation.
At the root of our socialism is a profound commitment to democracy, as means and end. As we are unlikely to see an immediate end to capitalism tomorrow, DSA fights for reforms today that will weaken the power of corporations and increase the power of working people. This includes redefining and restructuring economic relationships across all parts of society.
We are activists committed to democracy as not simply one of our political values but our means of restructuring society. True democracy cannot coexist with inequality. We are committed to centering the voices of our most vulnerable community members as the only path forward. Our vision is of a society in which all people have a real voice in the choices and relationships that affect the entirety of our lives. We call this vision democratic socialism—a vision of a more free, democratic and humane society.
